Hughes County Sheriff Cuts Ties with Muscogee Nation in Facebook Post; Tribe Responds

HOLDENVILLE, Oklahoma – Hughes County Sheriff’s Office has released a letter stating the organization will “no longer be honoring” their cross-deputization agreements with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Lighthorse Police. The letter dated February 8 came from a Facebook post from the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office late evening February 9. The post included a document authored by Hughes County Sheriff Marcia Maxwell. The letter reads as follows:

Watch that Snowplow

We dodged a big bullet last week. Our cold spell and near zero temperatures were mixed with days of high painful winds. But the real deep snow stayed away. Even as it was, we got several inches of the freezing mist, sleet and snow. But it was nothing like the series of ice storms and blizzards we suffered back in the 1970s. Made me remember one of the City of Allen’s faithful employees Les Rinehart. Or was it his twin brother Wes? But during one of these long-ago snowstorms, I remember him keeping the town grader in motion and going during our worse storm never letting our main streets get shut down by the drifts. I still appreciate this guy and all his hard work for the town of Allen.

Wetumka Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, March 12

The annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast is fast approaching. This year the benefit will be held on March 12 in the Wetumka School Cafeteria. The breakfast will consist of (All-You-Can-Eat) pancakes and sausage! The event starts at 7:00 am and goes through 12:00 pm. Each plate costs $6.00. Children up to 5-years-old eat for free.
