Bertie Bowman, Record-Setting Staff Member on Capitol Hill

Bertie Bowman in 2009. He started working at the Capitol in 1944. Senator J. William Fulbright hired him to be a clerk for the Foreign Relations Committee in 1965.Credit...Roll Call, Via Associated Press Bertie Bowman, who began his career sweeping the steps of the U.S. Capitol in 1944, joined the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1965 and retired 56 years later, making him the longestserving Black staff member in Congress, died on Wednesday in North Bethesda, Md.
