Weleetka Graham EMS donates AED to local nutrition center

On February 26, the Weleetka Graham EMS presented the Weleetka New Age Center with a Zoll AED. The Zoll AED was received through a grant from L.A Gear Grants. The AED Grant was received in conjunction with Weleetka Graham EMS providing AHA CPR training to the center free of charge to three of their e mployees. The grant program states the Zoll AED had to be placed in a public access area (public building) that at least 65% of the people who attend functions there could possibly need the AED at one point. February is African American History Month

February marks the annual nationwide observance of African American history. Historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded, in 1926, Negro History Week to this occasion to highlight the history and contributions of African Americans. African American History Month is recognized int eh United State States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The month of February was selected to coincide with the birth dates of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

Dr. Donnie Nero Sr. Receives Trailblazer Award

ADA. The East Central University Black Alumni Association honored lifetime educator and ECU alum Donnie Nero with its prestigious Trailblazer Award as part of the program for the annual Louise Young Diversity Lecture on campus Thursday night.

Gunfight at Boley, Oklahoma

The most famous shoot-out in Boley, Oklahoma, occurred on November 23, 1932, when Pretty Boy Floyd’s right-hand man, George Birdwell and two confederates attempted to rob the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Boley. Birdwell was accompanied by C. C. Patterson and a black man from Earlsboro nmed Charles “Pete” Glass who drove the getaway car. Birdwell and Glass were killed by alarmed armed residents and Patterson was wounded and sent to prison. Floyd reportedly cautioned Birdwell about trying to rob the Boley bank and didn’t think wise of it, he knew Boley was a unique Oklahoma town.
