Betty Hulstine Honored on 90th Birthday

Betty Sue was born at home in Holdenville on February 6, 1935. The sixth of eight children born to Joe and Louceil Kaiser. Hard work and a loving family are what she remembers about her early life on the farm, along with flow er sack dresses and picking cotton and peanuts with her father and siblings. She used a small gunnie sack her father made special for her so that 5-year-old Betty could carry it without it being too heavy. She also had a stool so she could wash dishes as her younger sister dried them. It was around this time that she started attending school in the tworoom schoolhouse of Pleasant Grove. The family then moved closer to Wetumka, and she attended Wetumka schools for the next 10 years. At age twelve, a tornado lifted the family home off its foundation. Her father rebuilt, this time with running water and an indoor bathroom! After taking a home economics class in 7th grade, where she learned to sew, her father bought her a sewing machine and she made the family’s clothes, a hobby she still enjoys.
