Tom Colbert was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on December 30, 1949. He graduated from high school in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Colbert came from “an extremely poor background in Sapulpa, Oklahoma,” the eldest child of a single mother, Edith Colbert, who started out on welfare. She and other family members instilled in him the drive to “work hard, be respectful, dream the impossible dreams, to never give up on those dreams no matter how times got.” His grandfather, in particular, taught him that “the only way to break the family’s chains of poverty” was to earn a college degree.

Winter finally arrives in Vernon, the first time in over 5 years that the temperature dropped low enough for long enough for the snow to last more than a few hours. The snow began falling around 11p.m. with flakes so heavy you could hear them landing. By the next morning it had started to melt.
