Frank Foster

Frank T. Foster passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at his home in Calvin, Oklahoma at the age of 72. Frank was born September 24, 1948 in Wewoka, Oklahoma to Buster Foster and Margaret Eva (Poole) Foster. Frank graduated from Holdenville High School. Frank married Linda Bolinger on May 11, 1966. He worked for O.G. & E. for 28 years and was a line foreman. Frank was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Juree Darnell. He is survived by his wife Linda Foster of the home, two sons; Franky Foster and Greg Foster, 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one brother Don Sims of Allen. Frank is survived by numerous other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Cole Foster, Isaac Darnell, Wayne Foster, Clinton Darnell, Emmitt Burklin and W.L. Hanks. Honorary pallbearers are Zake Hanks, John Ramsey, Sauncia Burklin, Nikhollesha Foster and Jasmine Foster. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2021 at Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Holdenville, Oklahoma with Pastor Lloyd Cross officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home, Holdenville, Oklahoma.

Black History is Oklahoma History

Anyone wishing to establish schools for freedmen in Oklahoma after the Civil War faced serious challenges because of Indian Territory’s unusual status in the United States. In addition to the common problems of white opposition and lack of money, those who wanted to educate former slaves also faced the reality of different problems and reactions within each of the Five Tribes. In 1866 the U.S. government concluded new treaties the tribes, requiring that each recognize its former slaves as tribe members. The national Freedman’s Bureau, created by Congress in 1865, operated in Indian Territory for several months under the leadership of Gen. John Sanborn but ceased operation when the new treaties were negotiated. As a result, most of the effort to educate freedmen originated within each tribe and differed from group to group.
