Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19 that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

Tulsa Remote is a group of people enticed to join Tulsa’s talented and successful workforce community. The George Kaiser Family Foundation brings in a diverse, bright, and driven individuals to the city of Tulsa for community building, collaboration, and networking. They come in from all parts of the United States. They are given some money upfront to help with relocation expenses, a monthly stipend to keep things moving, and the rest is given when they finished the first year of commitment. This group decided to enrich their stay by touring the original thirteen incorporated Black towns of Oklahoma. The month of May, the concluded the third leg of the tour by visiting Grayson, Clearview, and Boley. In Grayson, they met Mayor Leon Anderson at the Grayson Community Center. In Clearview, they met with Mayor Marilyn Jackson at the Clearview Main Street Community Center. In Boley, they met with Mayor Dr. Francis Shelton at the Boley Community Center. The group was able to hear the town’s histories and tour the towns while visiting the communities. Each month the group varies in size and participates. Several of the participants have been on all three legs. The next leg, the group will visit Tatums and Lima.
