Jimmie David ‘J. D.’ Norton Sr. passed away at his home in Holdenville on Friday, August 11, 2023, at the age of 80 years.

J. D. was the son of Luther Franklin Norton and Neva Jewel (Null) Norton, born on April 1, 1943, in Holdenville, Oklahoma, where he was brought up and attended schools. He lied about his birthdate and joined the U.S. Army at age 17 during the Vietnam war years. He served eight years, including 15 months in Germany, and was honorably discharged on April 2, 1968.

He married Shirley Ann Robinson on April 7, 1976, and they lived in Henryetta for five years before returning to Holdenville, their lifelong home. J. D. worked for many years as a roofer with Wayne Harjo. He became a minister of the gospel and worked for many years assisting in various churches and ministered in the Hughes County Jail for more than twenty years. He didn’t have any particular hobby but enjoyed spending most of his time reading his Bible and preaching.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Neva Norton; step-daughter Tracy Chadwick and step-grandson Chris Collins; brothers Bill Norton and Troy Norton, and sisters Mary Norton and Linda Wiggins. He is survived by three sons: Phil Norton (Sherry) of Oklahoma City, Mark Norton and Jimmie Norton Jr. (Jennifer), all of Holdenville; step-daughter Tammie Orsburn, also of Holdenville; brother Eugene Harrod of Tulsa and sister Velma Townsend of Indiana; nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 16th, 10:00 am at Fisher Funeral Home-Lillye Chapel, and J. D. was laid to rest at Holdenville Cemetery with Rev. Bill Chesser officiating. Pallbearers were David Norton, Bubba Norton, Ron Norton, Jimmie Norton Jr, Lance Farber, and Sean Cowart. www.fisherfh. net
