Darrel Clark Whitton WWII Veteran

Darrel Clark Whitton was born on January 18, 1924 to Walter and Ruth Whitton in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Darrel departed his earthly home September 21, 2020 at the age of 96.

In 1930, the Whitton Family moved to Holdenville, Oklahoma where Darrel resided for 90 years.

Darrel is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Walter Whitton and George Whitton and sister Elizabeth Freemen.

Darrel had fond memories of his early life on Gulf and Echo Streets where he made lifelong friends. The Whitton family were active members of the Barnard Memorial United Methodist Church.

Darrel graduated from Holdenville High School in 1942 in the heights of World War II. He was inducted into the Army Air Corps in March 1943, where he trained in aeronautical navigation school. Darrel was discharged in October of 1945 with a rank of Second Lieutenant.

The most important story of Darrel’s life began at Holdenville Junior High where he met and fell in love with Betty Jean Sipe. Darrel and Betty were married at the altar of the Barnard Memorial United Methodist Church on February 10, 1945. Darrel started Whitton Trucking Company in 1946 and worked for Boise Cascade Corporation. In 1994 he retired from his final career from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission as a Field Inspector. Darrel was a lifelong member of the American Legion.

Darrell is survived by his wife Betty of the home; son, Gary Clark Whitton of Holdenville; daughter, Dana Waggoner and husband Dennis of Escalante, Utah; son, Steven Gene Whitton of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Dustin Littell and wife Tina of Chandler, Arizona, Nathan and Kristina Waggoner of Escalante, Utah, Leah and Brian Bloom of Flagstaff, Arizona, Parker Clark Whitton of Boise, Idaho; great-grandchildren, MaKenna, Caden and Reese Littell, Lydia and Emmeline Bloom, and Augustus Clay Waggoner.

Funeral service will be 2:00pm Friday September 25, 2020 at the Barnard Memorial United Methodist Church officiated by Pastor Robert Foos. Interment will follow at Holdenville Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bob Sherry, Jay Janes, Walt Sherry, John Chastain, Larry Scroggins and David Foster. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Cowart, Jim Salazar, Bill Anderson, Bill Johnson and John Giles.

In Lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Barnard Memorial United Methodist Church, 300 East 8th, Holdenville, OK 74848

Services are under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home in Holdenville, Oklahoma.
